The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has condemned the international community’s selective application of international law in response to what it describes as genocide in Gaza.
Philippe Lazzarini, the agency’s Commissioner-General, voiced his concerns during a press conference in Berlin, criticizing the lack of consistent international action regarding the genocide of Israel against the Gaza Strip, where approximately 70% of its infrastructure has been destroyed.
Lazzarini characterized the dismantling of UNRWA as “a target of war,” emphasizing “the dire conditions faced by humanitarian workers and the unprecedented scale of destruction” in the region.
He pointed out that “there is a growing perception that international law is being applied selectively, particularly in light of the current crisis”.
Furthermore, he highlighted that “most of Gaza’s population is living in overcrowded conditions, occupying less than 10% of the territory”.
According to UNRWA data, around 1.9 million people, wich represents approximately 90% of Gaza’s population, are internally displaced.
Lazzarini’s statements underscore the urgent need for a more equitable and effective international response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where millions continue to suffer from the prolonged conflict and its devastating consequences.
